If you are hoping to have students do more digital writing based on a writer's workshop model using Google Classroom and Google Drive I recommend looking at the following suggestions for setting up a writer's notebook student template using Google Slides rather than using Google Docs. In the video and slide presentation I discuss the advantages of Google Slides' layout options, the slide preview window, and revision and annotation options using the the shape tool. This resource includes a step-by-step video tutorial, slide presentation, and printable guide. You can also use my Writer's Notebook template as a starting point.

I have a question... I tried this and the next day the students were only given view only status. Did I miss a step?

If I "make a copy" for each student then any alternations that I make to the slideshow ie. adding a scaffold/anchor chart/video do not appear on the student's slide unless I do it manually on their individual slide. Have you found a way around this? A way that I can update all slides depending on my instruction for the day - or disseminate something into all slides?

Great question, Lindsay. At this time, when you use Google Classroom to "create a copy" for each student there is not a way make a change to the original document and have those changes reflected across every student's copy.

Has this been updated so that teacher's can make additions to student work after the student opens the slides?
